Building a Series to Help Lift People's Mood

We’ve just released Activate Your Mood - our first Series dedicated to targeting low mood and depression. We asked its creator, Clinical Psychologist Dr Kate Daley, to share some insight into the rationale behind the Series and the collaborative process involved.

This Series aims to improve people’s mood by changing their behaviour - what’s the idea behind this?  

The series is based on something called behavioural activation, a technique used to treat depression. The underlying idea is that how we feel and what we do are closely related. If we feel good, we do things that make us feel good. But when we don’t feel good we do the opposite, tending to become less active and more withdrawn. Unfortunately this makes us feel worse as we don’t have the opportunity to experience the things that are good for our mood - achievement, connection and enjoyment. To break this cycle, we need to change our behaviour to allow ourselves to experience these things, and in doing so can improve our mood.

What was the most important consideration for you in creating this Series?

I’m really passionate about digital mental health and using technology to improve wellbeing. The number one priority for me and the Unmind team is always to ensure that things are evidence-based. If someone is low in mood, looking for help can feel like a really big step and so it’s crucial that we offer something that’s not only engaging, but also highly effective. We take a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) approach as there’s a huge amount of evidence to support it as an intervention for depression, and numerous clinical trials have shown that it works well online. 

How did you help bring this Series to life for users? 

This is a good question, I actually spent quite a bit of time thinking about this. If someone is low in mood they’re likely struggling with motivation and concentration so we knew it would be crucial to ensure the Series was engaging and digestible. We have an advantage through delivering this digitally, meaning we were able to make things more relatable than something you’d see in a textbook, and we experimented with some really fun videos. An important part of behavioural activation is mood monitoring, and for this we’ve been able to use the built-in Check-In function of the Unmind platform - it means people can use it on the go, any time they want to and everything they record will be stored safely for them. 

What was the process of collaboration like? 

Fantastic! I think because everyone at Unmind is so passionate about what they do. There is an incredible amount of work that goes into each Series, with experts in everything from graphic design and video editing to user experience and chatbot coding - a lot of collaboration! Having such a strong shared vision makes it all quite easy to be honest. It was also lovely to bounce ideas off the Unmind Psychology and Content teams, as sometimes two heads really are better than one!

What do you hope people will gain from this Series? 

I hope people will be able to get a better understanding of their mood and feel empowered to make change. Through making small changes I hope they will see improvements in not only their mood but in their motivation, concentration, and energy levels. I’d like to think that by completing this Series we might be able to help people get more of a spring back in their step!
