Inside Unmind: Meet the Content and Psychology teams

Steve Peralta, Co-Founder and Chief Content Officer, and Dr Heather Bolton, Head of Psychology, discuss what it's like behind the scenes at Unmind – and why now couldn't be a better time for you to join.

Let's see a show of hands. Who didn't brush their teeth this morning?

Your hand almost certainly remained fixed to your mouse, trackpad, screen – insert your device of choice.

Society as a whole doesn't agree on many things (as the last decade so clearly demonstrated), but as far as dental hygiene is concerned, we're pretty much on the same page.

Here’s the odd thing.

Given that our brains are endlessly more complex and interesting than our teeth, why do so few of us devote any time to keeping them healthy? The answer is a combination of societal stigma, a lack of understanding and deficient resources.

These are all things employers have the power to change.

Unmind is a workplace platform that combines rigorous psychology with accessible technology to help employees measurably improve their mental health. By addressing emotional wellbeing, we improve our personal and professional performance, helping us to get the most from life and work.

John Lewis, British Airways, and ASOS are just a few of the companies using Unmind to nurture the mental wellbeing of their workforces. Thanks to their confidence in our mission and the brilliant humans behind Unmind, we’re delighted to have secured another major round of funding, which brings us nicely onto why we’re writing this post:

We’re hiring. For lots of roles.

So if you want to work in the mental health space for a growing tech company, and would like to know a little more about day-to-day life at Unmind, you’re in the right place.

In this series of blogs, we catch up with Unminders across the organisation to explore what it’s like behind the scenes.

In this post, we chat with co-founder and Chief Content Officer, Steve Peralta, and Head of Psychology, Dr Heather Bolton, who represent the Content and Psychology teams.

So Steve, why did you start Unmind?

Steve 1

Steve: On a personal level, I'm genuinely interested in and passionate about how we go about living fulfilling lives, and our minds are an essential component of this. As a group, we also believed that the mental health care system was too problem-focused and often unable to provide the right support at the right time. So we saw an opportunity to play a role in changing this.

How about you Heather, what attracted you to the company?

Heather 1

Heather: When I first met the founders and they told me about Unmind’s mission, it really resonated with me. I had worked in the NHS for many years and knew only too well the barriers that stood in the way of people accessing the right help at the right time. I could see how empowering the Unmind platform could be for anyone using it, and how it could help overcome so many of those blockers. Unmind is also playing a huge part in changing culture by bringing mental health into everyday conversation and for me that’s really important.

What do you both like most about working here?

Steve 1

Steve: I'm grateful that I get to work alongside people I respect, admire and enjoy being around, and I'm referring to every single one of my colleagues. That we are an authentically mission-driven organisation means a lot to me too. And the dogs. I love having little Genie and Dexter as part of the Unmind team!

Heather 1

Heather: I love the fact that I get to contribute to such a brilliant product that has a tangible impact on people’s lives – there’s nothing better than hearing feedback from our users.

What's on the horizon for your teams in 2020 at Unmind?

Heather 1

Heather: For me, 2020 will be about growing the Psychology team with new expertise, and working to understand exactly what works best for our users. We’ll be further developing the content, and fine-tuning the way we deliver it, so we can maximise its overall impact.

Steve 1

Steve: I'm looking forward to building our already fantastic Content team this year, through hiring and collaboration with leading international experts, creatives, and passionate mental health advocates. We'll also continue with our commitment to ongoing improvement, ensuring that our tools and training on the platform are as helpful as possible.

And finally, both, what advice would you give to anyone looking to apply?

Heather 1

Heather: This is a great time to be joining Unmind – employers are keenly aware of the importance of investing in their employees’ mental health and there’s a huge appetite for people to find digital solutions. Leaving the NHS to join a startup was a big leap of faith for me but I’m so glad I did it.

Steve 1

Steve: If you're brilliant at what you do, genuinely care about others, and ready to commit to a meaningful, critical mission, then please do apply for a suitable role!
